Well this was just the cosiest little weekend ever! Our own cabin in one of the Western Cape’s prettiest small towns. Our romantic getaway to the Eco Treehouse in Swellendam is one we won’t soon forget.
I know we use the word ‘cosy‘ alot, but this cabin is exactly that! We came in Winter and found such comfort inside this little wooden home. Staying here just made us want to sell everything, downsize our life and move to where the birds replace our alarm clocks.
Don’t get us wrong, we love a 5* hotel and all the luxuries that come with it, but this kind of getaway is incomparable. This style of “escape” is all about the actual escape. We found ourselves really relaxing here and just enjoying quality time together.
This kind of experience is what made us fall in love with travel in the first place!
Setting expectations
This cabin is not 100% secluded. The treehouse is across the small pond from the owner’s personal home. You can also see two other properties in the distance. Although complete privacy is everything on a romantic escape, having neighbours always gives us that calm sense of safety! The owners and their two young boys are incredibly friendly and their life in the farmhouse next door is so inspiring to see. They also have some great travel tips for everything Swellendam!
The small cabin is self-catering with all the essentials. Rudi made us a delish chicken curry on the first night! The infrared sauna and hot pool are private and all yours to enjoy!
Sleeping in
Bad or not, we shamelessly enjoyed binge watching some Netflix in bed on the Sunday morning. Their Wifi is really fast which was so unexpected for an “eco cabin” (great for abit of Spotify ambiance)! We stayed until the Monday but could have easily made this our office for the entire week.
It’s hard to explain why this weekend brought us so much comfort. Maybe it was the cold weather drawing us near, or the sound of the wind blowing through the tall trees trees on either side of us.
Or maybe it was the golden light enjoyed from the wood fired hot tub! These jacuzzi pools are always an absolute winner for any romantic weekend away! We recommend pouring sundowners and heading to the pool for sunset!
What to do in Swellendam
We really enjoyed wondering through the main town of Swellendam. It is the third oldest town in South Africa which is evident in all the traditional Cape Dutch architecture. The big white NG Kerk (church) is such a beauty!
We had coffee at the Ikigai Artisan Coffee Bar, bought super cheap frozen berries from the Wildebraam Berry Farm, Belgium chocolates from ‘Chocolat etc’ and fresh honey and buchu tea from the ‘Honey Shop’.
The Marloth Nature Reserve is also right behind the cabin. This is a wonderful place to go waterfall chasing or hiking.
